It’s almost No-Shave November again, but what does that mean?
If you’ve never seen this part of the cancer advocate’s calendar observed before, it means that people will be walking around with unusual shagginess to benefit cancer awareness and cancer prevention. It’s a way to bring attention to cancer care and treatment, signal someone’s commitment, and display something that represents the cause. It’s also convenient, but that’s not the point. No-Shave November is a creative way to share your caring with the world around you.
What Is No-Shave November?
No-Shave November is when people refrain from cutting their hair or shaving during the month. It was started by the Hill Family in 2009 and has grown rapidly ever since. There’s a corollary movement called Movember that has adherents in America, Australia, and elsewhere, where men grow their mustaches in recognizance of cancer sufferers and cancer victims.
The Financial Aspect of No-Shave November
Why is No-Shave November important? Partly because it has led to raising millions of dollars to fund cancer research and fight various kinds of cancer.
The No-Shave November organization run by the Hill Family has already raised $2 million, and that’s not including many other efforts related to the movement.
The organization also manages the CARPE Diem (Cancer Awareness Research Prevention and Education) newsletter. It estimates that the organization and its partners have raised $12 million for cancer awareness research and prevention. That doesn’t include other corollary efforts that have raised much more over the years that people have been using this tradition.
Non-profit partners include the American Cancer Fund, the Foundation for Lung Cancer, the Testicular Cancer Society, and the National Foundation for Cancer Research.
If you see someone walking around looking hairier or furrier than they usually do, you know that No-Shave November is here. Yes, it’s just after Halloween, but it’s a much more meaningful “festivity” than some might think. So when you see a man with a big push-broom above his lip or someone walking around with their big hair billowing free, remember that they are probably helping to raise money for fighting cancer. Have a chat – because this kind of awareness is really what No-Shave November is all about!
