Spending a lot of time outside in the sun this summer? Just like you protect your skin with sunscreen before spending time outside, protecting your hair is important too. Prolonged sun exposure can damage your hair in several ways. This summer, take a few easy measures to keep your hair healthy and looking great.

How Does Sun Damage Affect Hair?

Many people do not realize that the sun has powerful effects on the structure of the hair.

To begin with, the sun causes internal damage by weakening your strands of hair. In turn, this can make you more susceptible to breakage and split ends, which can impact the appearance of your hair.

Furthermore, the sun is also damaging to hair that is colored. If you’ve dyed your hair, your hair is already more susceptible to sun damage. Spending too much time in the sun can make your colored hair dryer and weakened. The UV rays from the sun may also cause your colored hair to fade or become brassy.

Easy Ways to Protect Your Hair in the Sun

Protecting your hair from sun damage is simple and easy.

First, start by adding a barrier before you spend a lot of time in the sun. Physical barriers, such as hats, can keep your hair from drying out and keep it shiny. Using a scarf or a hat is a simple way to create a physical barrier, and it will help you stay cool too. Also, if possible, go out in the sun early or late in the day, as opposed to when the sun is at its peak, at midday.

Another thing to do is limit your use of heat styling tools in the summer. Heat styling exposes your hair to even more heat and dryness. Take a break from heat styling in the summer to keep your hair healthy. Using an air-dry cream product can help keep your hair dry frizz-free naturally.

Staying hydrated is also important during extreme heat. Hydration can affect your hair too. Using a leave-in conditioner after showering can support hydration, along with moisturizing shampoo and conditioner products.

When selecting hair care products, avoid chemical-based products. Using natural-based products can keep your hair in healthier condition. In addition, the chemicals such as chlorine that are found in swimming pools can be exceptionally drying. Some frequent swimmers may wish to use swim caps to prevent their hair from exposure to chlorine.
