Hair systems of the past didn’t allow for active lifestyles. One wrong jump, a gust of wind, or a quick sprint for the bus could send your hair system flying. Luckily those days are long gone. Today’s hair systems are durable, customizable, and versatile. They’re designed for any activity you want to take part in – including swimming. Yes! You read that right – you can swim with a hair system on – but there are a few things you need to know to protect it.

Treat the Hair System Like Your Real Hair

Have you ever gone to a swimming pool and noticed a strong bleach smell? This smell comes from chlorine. Chlorine kills bacteria and prevents the growth of fungi in swimming pools. While you may see people jumping into the water without their hair protected, chlorine is very harsh on human hair. Chlorine strips your hair of moisture and leaves it feeling extremely dry and brittle, which leads to weak hair strands and split ends.

Here are a few ways you can keep chlorine from damaging your new hair system:

Wet your hair before entering the pool. Hair requires moisture, and just like the cells in your body, hair absorbs water. If your hair is already wet before you get in the pool, it will not absorb as much of this chemical.

Wear a swimming cap. While not the most stylish, swimming caps protect your hair from chlorine damage.

Rinse your hair as soon as you exit the swimming pool. If you happen to be in a location that has a shower, use it to rinse your hair system after swimming. This way, you’re not letting the chlorine sit in your hair.

Use a clarifying shampoo. Whether you’re swimming in the ocean or a swimming pool, a clarifier removes harsh chemicals and excess salt from your hair. Use it the same way you would use a regular shampoo. Make sure you rinse it all out before applying the conditioner.

Use a leave-in conditioner. Leave-in conditioners are great for adding softness and sheen to your hair system while protecting the strands. Once you’re out of the pool, wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo before applying a leave-in conditioner. This type of conditioner moisturizes and repairs your hair system.

Choose the Right Bonding Method for Your Hair System

Wearing a clip-in hairpiece may not be ideal for diving into a pool. Instead, opt for a more secure bonding method such as liquid bonding or a hair system containing a combination of clips and straps. These bonding and closure methods give you the freedom to swim without worrying about detachment.

Summary

No need to sit poolside this year! Don’t let this summer pass you by simply because you’re wearing a hair system. There are plenty of fun activities to participate in – and you could be right there in the midst of them! If you’re considering a hair system, contact Custom Hair Tampa Bay today by clicking here.
