A lot of things can cause hair loss – genetics, chemicals, scalp injuries – but are our shampooing habits or the shampoo we use contributing to that extra hair gathering around the drain?
In her article on the topic for Hair World Magazine, Hazel Lake says it’s unlikely. “Ultimately the basic function of shampoo is really good for your hair and scalp.” Shampoo simply lifts the dirt and oil from your hair and scalp, and the massaging action opens the capillaries and encourages blood flow. But different shampoos contain a laundry list of ingredients that can contribute to hair loss.
Speaking to AARP, Doctor Robert Dorin says that the chemical responsible for thick lather, sodium laurel sulfate, strips essential oils and breaks down proteins necessary for healthy hair. Sodium chloride can cause a dry, itchy scalp, and PEG strips the hair of moisture.
So, how do you keep your hair clean without stripping it from your scalp? Using a moisturizer like leave-in conditioner adds a layer of protection, Lake says. You should also avoid certain ingredients, like:
Sulfates
Sodium Chloride
Ammonia Chloride
Formaldehyde, Quaternium-15, and Parabens
Propylene Glycol
Lanolin and Petroleum-based Oils
Alcohol
Fragrances and Colors that irritate your scalp
She adds these suggestions for getting the most out of your shampooing sessions:
Take your time massaging your scalp. Scalp massage increases circulation and oxygenation, contributing to healthier skin.
If you wash your hair every day, try waiting an extra day or two. Or try washing it every day if you don’t.
Use a leave-in conditioner to keep your hair follicles moisturized.
While the act of shampooing your hair does not cause hair loss, some ingredients might. Use a high-quality shampoo and conditioner and consult a hair restoration specialist if you’re experiencing hair loss. To schedule a free consultation at Custom Hair Tampa Bay click here.
