Hair extensions have been worn for thousands of years, with the first documented proof dating back to the Egyptians. Since then, hair extensions and wigs have continued to grow in popularity.
If you’re interested in them or currently have them and are interested in how you should maintain them, this is the guide for you.
The Benefits of Human Hair
When it comes to hair extensions, there are a wide variety of options, including synthetic and human hair. As the title suggests, human hair are just that — 100 percent real hair, offering the highest possible quality.
Some of the advantages of selecting human hair include but are not limited to:
The ability to style — Chemically treated or synthetic hair are often hard to style and will not often last. In comparison, when care for properly, they can be styled time and time again.
Offers a more natural look — These extensions blend subtly with your real hair, offering a more natural final look.
Increased longevity — Since you can wash and condition them, they outlast alternatives, remaining soft and elegant over time.
Here’s How to Care for and Maintain Human Hair
If you’d like to instantly transform your look and maintain that look, here’s how to get the most out of your extensions.
Step one: How to wash
These extensions should be treated just like your natural hair. If your extensions are sewn-in, for example, you can gently wash them just as you do your natural hair. Depending on your hair type, wash your extensions 3-4 times weekly. Also, be sure to include a quality condition in your hair care routine.
In comparison, if they are clipped in, you should wash them separately. To protect them, be sure to use a moisturizing, sulfate-free shampoo (this also applies to sewn-in extensions). Simply run a lukewarm bath in your sink, add a teaspoon or two of shampoo and wash by hand, gently combing from the ends up. Rinse, condition, and then dry.
Step two: Drying
If you have sewn-in extensions, allow them to dry before going to bed. This will reduce the amounts of tangles. For extensions you clip-in, lay them flat on a towel to fully dry, before gently combing them once again.
Step three: Make and apply a “hair freshener”
If you’d like to take your hair care routine to the next level, simply make a hair freshening spray. Combine water and your favorite essential oil(s) in a spray bottle and apply weekly.
Step four: Protect whenever possible
If you style your hair often, invest in a quality heat protectant. Not only should you apply such a product before drying or styling, but also before heading out on a hot day.
