laser therapyMost people lose about 50-100 hairs daily. For many this hair grows back. For some it doesn’t due to factors, such as heredity, age, illnesses, and more. If you belong to the second group, you might be anxious and frustrated. However, whether your hair is just thinning or showing signs of significant loss, you need not worry. There are many treatments, such as low-level laser therapy, available to counter hair loss.

How Does Laser Hair Therapy Work?

LLLT is a non-chemical, non-surgical way for hair loss treatment. It is a form of light or heat treatment, which is quite safe and tolerable. It has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating thinning hair or pattern baldness.

Also called red light or cold laser therapy, LLLT uses devices that emit a light. This penetrates the scalp and stimulates hair follicles, by irradiating photons into scalp tissues. These photons are absorbed by cells, which induces hair growth.

Benefits of Laser Hair Therapy

Scientific: Lasers have been used for medical purposes for long. In the 1960s, Professor Endre Mester discovered that wounds could be healed using laser therapy. Since then many have studied and recorded the interaction of laser light with the human body. Many National Institutes of Health (NIH) studies have illustrated hair growth in both men and women after LLLT and that it is safe and effective.

Non-invasive: The light from the lasers used for hair growth is absorbed by the target tissues, but it does not heat them. It reinvigorates blood circulation and repairs cellular metabolism, thus stimulating hair follicles. There is no cutting or burning involved in laser hair therapy.

Without adverse effects: Although there could be some temporary hair loss in the area where LLLT is used, this is normal. It could be a phase of the hair growth cycle.

Resulting in better hair: You might have heard of lasers being used for hair removal. However, there is a lesser known side effect of using them so—hair grows back thicker, fuller, and even in better color and texture!

Suitable for all: The FDA cleared LLLT for the treatment of androgenic alopecia or hereditary hair loss. However, anyone experiencing hair loss can benefit from it. Usually, people in the earliest stages of hair loss see the best results.

Before you opt for laser hair therapy, learn all you can about it. Approach trained professionals to administer it. Also, be patient and disciplined while undergoing the therapy, as it is typically done two to three times weekly and over a long period.
