coconut oilCoconut oil is a coveted kitchen ingredient known for imparting moisture into baked goods and providing a heart-healthier alternative to butter and vegetable and olive oils. It has also gained a cult following as a skin moisturizer and protectant. It seems like short of slathering coconut oil onto the hair, there’s nothing this miracle ingredient isn’t good for. Actually … people are slathering it onto their hair. Read on to learn why!

It’s an Effective, Inexpensive Deep Conditioner

Due to the chemical makeup of coconut oil, it penetrates hair more deeply than other conditioners. Massage warm oil into your hair, comb through, cover hair with a shower cap, keep it on for at least 30 minutes. Make sure to shampoo thoroughly to remove the oil. Style, and enjoy the glow!

It’s a Great Detangler

Warm a small amount of oil in your hands and gently comb through from the ends to the roots. No need to rinse out.

It Speeds Hair Growth

Coconut has vitamins and fatty acids that naturally dissolves sebum buildup from the hair follicles to encourage growth. Massage coconut oil into the scalp before you go to bed. Wrap your head with a scarf or towel, leave on overnight, and shampoo out in the morning. Not only does it encourage growth of the hair on your head, it can also help you achieve fuller, thicker eyebrows and eyelashes.

It Protects Hair from Sun Damage

Before you head to the pool, beach, or lake, or plan to spend a day in the great outdoors, massage a bit of coconut oil into your locks to prevent ultraviolet rays from penetrating and weakening the hair strands.

A Word on Warming

When it’s kept in a cooler room, coconut oil solidifies. In a warmer room, it liquefies. If you are using just a small amount of oil, you can simply warm it up by rubbing it between your hands. If you need a larger amount of oil, to deep condition, for instance, follow these steps to safely warm the oil.

Scoop oil into a small metal or glass bowl.

Fill a larger bowl with hot water.

Carefully place the smaller bowl into the larger bowl so it is partially submerged, but does not take on water.

Wait a few minutes until oil liquefies and warms.

Coconut oil is definitely not just a kitchen staple. Buy a jar for your bathroom, too!
