Losing your hair due to aging is stressful enough, but for teenage girls, hair loss can be utterly devastating. If you’re a teenager you likely already have insecurities about your looks, and experiencing hair loss at such a young age becomes extremely difficult.
There are four common causes of hair loss in teenage girls. The sooner the cause of hair loss is determined, the sooner something can be done about it.
- Poor Diet
Teenage girls in America are often consuming foods rich in starch, sugar and processed fats as opposed to a daily intake of fruits and vegetables. As a result, these girls are often deficient in vitamins and minerals which are crucial for a healthy head of hair.
- Previous Health Conditions
Sometimes, hair loss is a symptom of a much broader health issue. For instance, a scalp infection may result in hair loss. Other health issues which cause premature hair loss are an underactive or overactive thyroid, alopecia, diabetes and trichotillomania.
- Hormones
Teenage girls are typically undergoing major hormonal changes, which cause hormone levels to go up. Teens with higher levels of the hair loss hormone DHT may experience hair loss. Testosterone reacts with enzymes within the oil glands on the scalp to create DHT, which is what causes a lot of men to lose their hair in the latter years of life. Hair loss will continue until the hormone levels go back to normal.
4. Excessive Use of Products
Teenage girls tend to apply extra hair products to their hair and most of these styling gels and mousses cause hair to become dry and brittle. Hair care practices like the use of straighteners and curling irons, can also lead to premature hair loss. Tight hairstyles like ponytails and braids can result in the loss of large clumps of hair.
More often than not, hair loss in teenage girls may be stopped and reversed with a few lifestyle adjustments. More serious medical conditions should involve medical treatment.
